Can I operate a gas barbecue on my boat?

Category: Camping & Leisure

Barbecuing with the gas barbecue on boats and sailing boats is becoming increasingly popular. We say whether it is even permitted.

Casting your fishing rod from the boat, catching fresh fish and then preparing it directly on the gas barbecue. This is how many boat owners like to imagine it. However: Are you even allowed to operate a gas barbecue on board?

There isn’t really a legal text which explicitly refers to this purpose. It therefore makes sense in any case to use worksheet G 608 (A) of the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW). This technical rule deals with LPG systems on boats, hence the working title “Small water crafts – Operating and inspecting the LPG system”.

In principle, you are allowed to: Barbecue on the boat or sailing boat.

Barbecues are not heaters

But worksheet G 608 (A) does not indicate either whether it is permitted or not. It only restricts the use of gas barbecues. In this way, barbecues must not be used to heat interiors on the boat or sailing boat when temperatures fall.

In addition, the technical rule stipulates a general condition for gas equipment used on water crafts:The gas barbecue, oven, stove, etc. must have a CE marking and comply with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 10239. This standard defines what must be complied with when installing LPG systems on water crafts.

Two standard versions, and…

To answer the initial question: Yes, you may operate a gas barbecue on the boat. There is no rule against this imposed by legislators, associations or clubs. There is now also a very good selection of gas barbecues for boats. Models that are operated with a gas cartridge are popular due to their ease of use. However, many boat owners also make use of the 5 or 11-kilogram cylinder and set it up on deck.

The outlet box (GOK order number 21 731 15) was originally borrowed from the caravan sector. We have developed a version specifically for boats that is not prone to rust in the event of contact with salt water or a salty atmosphere.

Elegant solution

By contrast, GOK offers a relatively elegant solution with the outlet box for boats. It is located in the outer wall and is virtually a branch off of the permanently installed gas line. You can operate the gas barbecue directly via the gas cylinder in the cylinder case via a quick coupler (see illustration) and a corresponding hose assembly.
